Tangible and Intangible Heritage - Are they Really Castor and Pollux?
Dr. Yudhishthir Raj Isar gave this presentation in New Delhi, in November 2004. The unrelenting extension of the 'heritage' idea is a major symptom of the globalised cultural self-consciousness of our time, which has made the concept of culture, its forms and usages, ever more protean, its repertoires increasingly complex and diversified. 'Heritage' for its part, has been doubly expansive, as a growing number and variety of material traces of past cultural life - structures, sites, artefacts - have entered its embrace, and as the idea of heritage has recently cloned itself, with the universal recognition of a new immaterial double: 'intangible heritage'.
